Why We Switched From Teaching Textbooks

If you’ve read my curriculum review from last year (here), then you already know that we used Teaching Textbooks last year for math.   And we LOVED it!   However, we aren’t using again this year as we hoped we would.     We still love the company and the curriculum; however, we discovered our daughter might need some time with something a little bit different.   Over the summer we focused on improving math memorization and basic skills, as well as assessing our skill level. Although my oldest daughter did wonderful on much of this, it became evident that she struggled with retention. Each time we would go over…

How You Can Earn FREE Books

Did you know you can earn completely FREE books?!       (*Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links meaning I receive credit or compensation when you use the link at no additional cost to you. You can read more about that here.)   Once upon a time I was an avid reader. Four kids later and that isn’t quite as true; I now read when I can. Which, let’s be real, isn’t even daily anymore. Our Summer Homeschool Plans/Curriculum

One of my favorite things about being a homeschool family is that we function on whatever schedule works best for us. I love that we have this kind of freedom! That means I can schedule us off on the same days my husband is off, I can schedule us off anytime during the year we want to take a vacation, and I can create a lighter schedule around major holidays to work in more fun, holiday related stuff. It also means we get to opt to homeschool year around.   Don’t get me wrong, a year-long homeschool plan is not for everyone. That’s ok! You do what works best…

    Curriculum Choices 2017-2018 (5th Grade) & Review

No homeschool mama takes the job of picking out curriculum lightly. It can be a huge undertaking! I’m a big believer in having a system in place to help you conquer this, because it is not something you can just sit down and do in a day. I’ll share my process for choosing curriculum in a later post. Today, I just want to quickly share with you what we have been using this year, and how we like it.   English Shurley English has been wonderful for us! I love how it the curriculum is organized, and provides jingles to help students recall parts-of-speech. It provides students with a sound,…

Why We Homeschool & If We Will Continue

I get these questions A LOT; from friends, family, and complete strangers. We’ve found over the years that people are very intrigued by homeschoolers (who can blame them). So I figured I would answer those big questions right here. So, why do we homeschool? 1. God called us to it. Over the years God has called to, and away from homeschooling. The one time He called us away from our homeschooling was so I could take a position working at my husband’s school. He laid the change on our hearts many months before we even had a clue about the position; so when it was presented to us we knew…
